COVID pneumonia represents the active inflammation of the pulmonary parenchyma that is caused by SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that has caused the COVID-19 pandemic. Millions of patients have been affected worldwide and hospitalizations have occurred all over the globe. The condition can range from mild to severe and represents a challenge for clinicians.

COVID pneumonia has a complex pathophysiology, with profound derangements in ventilation and perfusion that causes profound and sometimes difficult to treat acute hypoxemic respiratory failure. International collaboration has put together multiple randomized clinical trials that have provided evidence-based medicine for the treatment of this illness.

Despite the above there is still significant morbidity and mortality associated with COVID pneumonia. It is important for clinicians to recognize this entity, and follow closely the rapidly changing recommendations regarding management and treatment.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for the following medical professionals who have a clinical interest in COVID pneumonia caused by SARS-CoV-2: Pulmonologists; Critical Care Specialists; Internal Medicine and Primary Care Physicians; Physician Assistants; Advanced Practice Nurses; and Nurse Practitioners.

Learning Objectives

After completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

1. Describe the complex physiologic abnormalities that cause profound hypoxemia in COVID pneumonia.
2. Discuss the use of antiviral therapy for the treatment of COVID pneumonia.
3. Explain the use of anti-inflammatory therapy for the treatment of COVID pneumonia.
4. Define the work-up necessary to identify pulmonary sequela in patients after hospitalization for COVID pneumonia. Also, review indication for specific therapies.
