Program Goals

Pulmonary hypertension encompasses a broad scope of disease states. This program will focus on pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) which begins as a vasculopathy within the small pulmonary arteries. It can eventually lead to symptoms of shortness of breath, hypoxemia and ultimately right heart failure. The goals of this program are to briefly review the updated hemodynamic definition and World Health Organization (WHO) categories of pulmonary hypertension. In addition, to obtain a better understanding of a validated treatment algorithm along with the available medications for the treatment of PAH. This activity will inform physicians and advanced practice providers about the various validated risk assessment tools which can determine prognosis in patients with PAH. Lastly, introduce novel medical therapies that are becoming available for the treatment of this disease which currently has no cure.   

Target Audience

Pulmonologists; Critical Care Specialists; Internal Medicine and Primary Care Physicians; Physician Assistants; Advanced Practice Nurses; and Nurse Practitioners.

Learning Objectives

After the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

1. State the updated hemodynamic definition of PAH and categories of pulmonary hypertension.
2. Identify risk assessment tools in the evaluation of patients with PAH.
3. Define the treatment algorithm for patients with PAH according to their individual risk assessment.
4. Describe how risk assessment tools can be used in clinical practice for the prognosis of PAH.
5. Summarize new treatments in pulmonary hypertension.
